The Boutaris Foundation was established in 1991, with its founding published in the Government Gazette in September, and began operating in January 1992.

Its mission has been to conduct scientific research and to study and promote the history of Greek wine—from vine to wine. That initial focus remains central, now enriched by an emphasis on cultural heritage, and guided by a vision of sustainable development for Greece’s wine-growing regions and the advancement of local communities.

The Foundation’s first president was Stavroula Kourakou-Dragona. The Board of Directors included Fani Boutari as Vice President, (kir) Yiannis Boutaris as Secretary, Konstantinos Boutaris as Treasurer, and Stellios Boutaris as the youngest member.

During the first decade of its operation, Boutaris Foundation had organized scientific fora and published many books about Greek Wine. After a long pause, it reactivates in 2024 with the primary goal of creating BIBON, the Enological Library (Bibliotecha Oenologica) in Naoussa, Northern Greece. The venture is housed at the historical Boutaris family building, where is also the registered office of the Foundation. The listing buidling came into the possession of the Foundation in 2024 through the generous donation of “HELLENIC WINERIES.”

SOURCES OF FUNDING
The Foundation relies on donations, sponsorships, and strategic partnerships with organizations in Greece and abroad to achieve shared goals. Since the very beginning, KIR-YIANNI S.A. has been a steadfast and permanent donor, while ALPAGLASS, DS SMITH, FORLABELS, and YARA HELLAS stand as valued partners supporting the mission of BIBON.

At BIBON, KIR-YIANNI S.A. operates a shop where visitors can purchase a curated selection of book titles. A collectible series of BIBON souvenirs, created in collaboration with STAMPA HELLAS, is also available. Proceeds from these sales contribute directly to covering the operation of BIBON sustaining its cultural initiatives. OENSIGHTS is BIBON’s technology partner.
